Acceptable Quality Limits / AQL

Updated: Oct 18, 2023

The AQL tells how many defective components are acceptable during random sampling quality inspections.

It is usually expressed as a percentage or ratio of the number of defects compared to the total quantity.

Avg. defective item = (No. of defective items / Inspected item qty) *100
AQL 2.5% means maximum avg. defective item is 2.5% for acceptance

Following AQL systems can be used in the garments industry for final inspection:

  • AQL 1%

  • AQL 1.5%

  • AQL 2.5%

  • AQL 4%

  • AQL 6.5%

  • AQL 10%

What does AQL 2.5 mean?

For instance, one has two shipments which need to be inspected following 2.5 AQL.

The first shipment is of 100 pieces

and the second shipment is of 1330 pieces.

1st shipment:

As per the sampling plan, one will pick 20 garments from 1st shipment.

For the first shipment (100 pieces lot size): Shipment will be accepted if you find 1 or fewer defective garments. If you get 2 or more than 2 defective garments this shipment will be failed (rejected).

2ns shipment:

As per the sampling plan, one will pick 125 garments from the 2nd shipment.

For the second shipment (1300 pieces lot size): Shipment will be accepted if you find 7 or fewer defective garments. If you get 8 or 8+ defective garments this shipment will be failed (rejected).

  • In AQL 2.5% For 1500 product unit can be checked 125 unit. Among those 125 units Ac/Re = 7/8

  • In AQL 6.5% For 1500 product unit can be checked 125 unit. Among those 125 units Ac/Re = 14/15

  • The more the AQL the better it is from the manufacturer
