There are two ways of yarn count.

  1. Direct Count

  2. Indirect Count

Direct Count:

Features

  1. Length constant

  2. Count is proportional to Coarseness

  3. Generally Synthetic yarns uses this method

Formula:

Where,

N = Yarn count L & W = Sample yarn length and weight respectively l & w = Unit yarn length and weight respectively

Common Direct Counts:

Mic Value:

Weight of the fiber per inch is termed as MIC value

Constant Value

Count 10D means the weight of 9,000m yarn is 10 gm
Count10 Tex means the weight of 1,000m yarn is 10 gm
4 MIC means the weight of 1" yarn is 4 micro gm

Indirect Count:

Features

  1. Weight constant

  2. Count is proportional to Fineness

  3. Generally Cotton yarns uses this method

Formula:

Where,

N = Yarn count L & W = Sample yarn length and weight respectively l & w = Unit yarn length and weight respectively

Common Indirect Counts:

Constant Value

Count 60 Ne means 60 hanks or 60*840 yds = 50,400 yds of yarn has a weight of 1 lb
Count 10 Nm means 10 km of yarn has a weight of 1 kg

Count Conversion:

Ne X Denier

= 5315

Ne X Tex

= 590.55

Deci- tex

= 10 X Tex

Denier

= 9 X Tex

Ne

= 0.59 X Nm

Lea

= 2.8 X Ne

Worsted

= 1.5 X Ne

Woolen (Dewsberry)

= 52.5 X Ne

Woolen (ysw)

 = 3.28 X Ne

Unit Conversion:

1 spyndle

= 14,400 yd

1 lb

= 7,000 grains

1 pennyweight (dwt.)

= 24 grains

1 lea

= 120 yd

840 yds

= 7 leas = 1 hank

1 meter

= 1.094 yd

1 kg

= 2.2046 lb
